It’s a silly rainy afternoon
Just the way it was
The day you went away
The doors are still ajar
The curtains still flailing and reaching out
But now it’s not for you
Just that it has become a habit
Like this cup of tea
Or a dreamless afternoon nap
Or the brush of this old leather chair
Against my cheek
Half a tune, played just like that, on the piano
The other half, remembered by the head
But not the fingers
A single note lingering
In the hope of next note, which comes not
A single drop just hanging precariously
From the window sill
Yet falls not
Just the way you did not falter
The day you went away
Just the way it was
The day you went away
The doors are still ajar
The curtains still flailing and reaching out
But now it’s not for you
Just that it has become a habit
Like this cup of tea
Or a dreamless afternoon nap
Or the brush of this old leather chair
Against my cheek
Half a tune, played just like that, on the piano
The other half, remembered by the head
But not the fingers
A single note lingering
In the hope of next note, which comes not
A single drop just hanging precariously
From the window sill
Yet falls not
Just the way you did not falter
The day you went away
